Good Will Hunting

It was a sobering experience to see the latest Census Bureau data showing that the economic crisis has been especially crippling for women and their families.  Poverty and extreme poverty among women, men and children in the United States increased significantly in 2010, with the overall poverty rate among women rising to 14.5 percent – the highest rate in 17 years with incomes less than half of the federal poverty level.

Seeing these statistics makes me angry because  media outlets aren’t telling these stories.   In the age of reality TV and celebrity gossip columns, it appears that reality is being swept under the rug!  Even in my own blog, The Lipstick Journal, we cover fashion and beauty; talk about latest fashion and trends, however,
I wanted to change it up a little.  We not only need to, but are going to do more!!

The reason that TLJ was conceived was to provide a platform that shares empowering tips and provides mentorship.  Our mission is to help women of all races, colors and socio-economic backgrounds realize their potential and power to get what we want out of life, while staying true to who we are, sexy, sassy, financially savvy, happy at work and at home.  Our intent here is to epitomize the true Go-Getter Girl spirit!  But if the conversation is only going to be about the latest Red-Bottoms, Gucci and Prada, then we are not doing our jobs well getting our message out and in essence barring a whopping 17 Million disenfranchised women from receiving that message.

So... A key component of being a Go-Getter Girl is to be fabulous when being fabulous counts.  We asked the question, "How do you do that, when you are a part of the statistic mentioned above?"

Lesson for today:  Looking good is a key component to feeling good and being confident in you.  It doesn't have to cost a fortune to do it.  This Sunday, to prove that point, my BF and I went to our local Good Will to see how we could benefit a woman in need.  Through a partnership with the GoodWill we want to find a woman who is in need of clothing to get back to work.  TLJ is reaching out to the community to teach, mentor and give back.  More on our efforts and how you can help to follow.

During our quest, we also decided to do a little shopping on our own and show the world how anyone can be a Go Getter!!  ...And if you’ve been  following TLJ’s Facebook page or the @MsMeLipstick handle on Twitter, you guys have already told the world, that you can be a Baaaad B!@#$ even when doing Good Will!!  See our experience below and then post comments on what you think of this article and cool ways that you can give back to your community!

Giving Back,

Ms. Me
