Satya Nadella’s Advice on Raises Stirs Wider Discussion Among Women

“The conversation around salary, the conversation around the art of women asking and how to ask are conversations that are happening organically already between my friends and myself,” she said. “For us, it only fuels the fire that they should be asking for raises.”

For one female engineer in Chicago, Mr. Nadella’s remarks were a reminder to ask not just for a raise but also for more challenging opportunities at work.

First Lady: 100,000 More Jobs Committed to Vets, Spouses

WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2011 – First Lady Michelle Obama today announced a private sector commitment to hire 100,000 veterans and military spouses by 2014, bringing to at least 125,000 the total commitment in response to President Barack Obama’s recent hiring challenge.
The International Franchise Association, which represents 1,100 franchises, has committed to hiring 80,000 veterans and military spouses by 2014 – with 5,000 jobs reserved for wounded warriors, Mrs. Obama said during a keynote address at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Business Steps Up: Hiring our Heroes event here.  Also, the first lady said the Military Spouse Employment Partnership has committed to employing 20,000 military spouses by 2014. IBM Hires First Female CEO

On October 26, 2011, IBM announced that Virginia "Ginni" Rommetty would be taking over the role of CEO in January 2012 when the current CEO, Samuel J. Palmisano, retires.  This is a historical moment.  The two largest technology companies will be both headed by powerful women.  In September, amongst drama and mayhem, HP ousted CEO Leo Apotheker and replaced him with Ms. Meg Whitman. The tides are changing in business and industry for women!!  I am really glad that we now have two more women who have broken the glass ceiling on career advancement.  Way to go HP and IBM!  Also, to Ms. Rommetty and Ms. Whitman, my hats off to you!  That's what I call leading from the front!!!
